Sterling blocks out the noise to let Three Lions roar

Raheem Sterling felt it was important to block the outside world off ahead of his match-winning turn in England s 1-0 Euro 2020 victory over Croatia.

Manchester City forward Sterling was played in for the only goal following some fabulous play by Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after 57 minutes at Wembley.

The 26-year-old s club future has been the subject of mounting speculation after losing his place as an automatic starter for Pep Guardiola, while there has been little progress in talks over extending his contract at the Etihad Stadium that expires in 2023.

A solitary goal for City since the end of February, allayed with the enviable options Gareth Southgate has in attack for England, led to calls for Sterling to be ditched in favour of Jack Grealish a…

Serie A preview: Milan, Napoli out to extend gap

AC Milan will be keen to extend their margin at the top of the Serie A when they travel to the promoted Lecce on Sunday.

Massimiliano Allegri s side will be desperate to atone for their 4-4 draw at home to eighth-placed Udinese last weekend, as Napoli cut Milan s lead on top of the table to four points with a 3-0 triumph over Juventus.

The league leaders last travelled to Lecce s Stadio Comunale Via del Mare for a Serie A match in 2008, and were held by a 90th-minute equaliser from the hosts.

Striker Ronaldinho, who left Milan for Brazilian club Flamengo on Monday, had earlier opened the scoring for the Rossoneri.

Lecce will be hoping for a similar performance on Sunday to their heroic 2-1 away win over the third-placed Lazio last weekend, yet the club i…

Caceres aware of Barca challenge

Sevilla defender Martin Caceres said he is anticipating a tough encounter when he faces parent club Barcelona on Sunday.

The on-loan Catalan stopper said a complete performance from the eighth-placed side would be the minimum required to take any points from the La Liga contest at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

We will have to be completely focused for 90 minutes, because Barcelona have such quality, Caceres said.

We are going to try and impose our game, because we are at home and Barcelona obviously will want to win. We will need a bit of luck and a will to win, because everyone wants to play in this game.

Uruguayan international Caceres recounted positive memories of his season at the Nou Camp in 2008 before a loan spell at Juventus, and said t…

Jonas linked with Spurs switch

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed the chance to sign Brazilian striker Jonas on a free transfer, .

The 30 year old has been out of contract since his release from Valencia, where he scored fifty-one goals in one hundred and thirty-nine appearances in all competitions over three-and-a-half seasons.

Prior to his move to La Liga in January 2011, Jonas netted regularly for Gremio in his home country, while he was also prolific during spells with Portuguesa, Santos and Guarani.

Internationally, he has been capped eight times, scoring both of his two goals in a 2-0 friendly victory over Egypt in November 2011.

Having failed to bring in a forward during the summer, Spurs remain low on attacking options with just Emanuel Adebayor, Roberto Soldado and Harry …

Norwich battle soaring prices

Norwich City boss Paul Lambert admits it is difficult for the club to buy players with inflated prices in the transfer market.

The Scottish manager is attempting to lure players to Carrow Road before they begin their fight in the English Premier League, having won promotion from the Championship this season.

But he said it was hard to bring players in with prices so high in the market.

It is tough to get lads. Where does the money stop or where do you actually start? I think the prices are really inflated. The money at the minute for transfer fees is out of control at times, Lambert told talkSPORT.

We can only do what we can do which I am totally at ease with.

We will try to get lads to the football club that I think will go and compete with …
