Genoa sack Ballardini, appoint Juric for third time

Ivan Juric has been appointed Genoa head coach for the third time in two years following the dismissal of Davide Ballardini.

Ballardini – who replaced Juric in November 2017 for his third stint at the helm– leaves the club 11th in Serie A following a 3-1 home defeat to Parma on Sunday.

Juric s first spell in charge of the club ended in February 2017, but he was reinstalled just two months later to replace Andrea Mandorlini.

He was swiftly succeeded at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris by Ballardini, but is back in charge and faces a daunting trip to runaway league leaders Juventus after the international break.

Genoa confirmed in a statement that Juric will be presented to the media on Wednesday.

Osasuna seal Europa Conference League spot as Valladolid relegated on final day of LaLiga

Osasuna sealed European qualification for the first time in over a decade-and-a-half, as Real Valladolid were relegated on a gripping final day of the season in LaLiga.

With champions Barcelona, as well as Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad having wrapped up Champions League football, the continental spaces were mostly settled before Sunday.

Ultimately, Jagoba Arrasate s Osasuna took the spoils with a 2-1 win over Girona, as Ernesto Valverde s Athletic finished two points adrift following a 1-1 draw at Real Madrid.

Columbus Crew double chance against New York City FC 4/7 for Tuesday’s MLS contest

Market: Columbus Crew double chance

Odds: 4/7 @

With a golden chance to make another statement and extend their buffer at the top of the Eastern Conference, Columbus Crew will make the trip to Yankee Stadium in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Starting with the hosts, crashing out of the MLS is Back tournament thanks to a 3-1 drumming against Portland earlier in the month, New York City made their Eastern Conference return in worrying fashion. Continuing on what has been a woeful start to the interrupted new campaign, the pressure already appears to be on new boss Ronny Deila. Watching their bitter cross-town rivals New York Red Bulls pick up a 1-0 win on the road last week, the one-time Celtic boss has seen his side collect just three points over their openi…

Solskjaer unfazed by Tan comments

Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unfazed by recent comments from chairman Vincent Tan, and focused solely on top-flight survival.

Talking to BBC Sport on Friday, Tan defended his record since taking over Cardiff in 2010 and criticised former manager Malky Mackay.

Tan also blamed the British press for the way he has been portrayed in public, but Solskjaer has played down the interview ahead of Cardiff s visit to Tottenham on Sunday, insisting the remarks will not affect his preparation for an important game.

They change nothing for this game, he said.

He s coming to the game, coming to see us.

I manage the club within my resources. He is saying we have a plan. Everything is in a structure, there s no ifs and buts.

He knows everything I ve done…

Lyon chief cracks the whip as PSG beckon

If Lyon s players had any smiles after their qualification for the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday, they were quickly erased by a furious post-match diatribe from club president Jean-Michel Aulas.

In the next chapter of a season in which Lyon have proved remarkably inconsistent, the seven-time French champions host Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday knowing that their every move will be scrutinised.

But Aulas s ire, once firmly aimed at under-fire coach Claude Puel, is now focused on the players themselves.

Lyon s 3-0 humbling at Schalke on Wednesday failed to prevent their progress to the Champions League last 16, but an unhappy Aulas has warned that heads could roll, and contracts cancelled, if the team do not improve.

It s more a problem of players …

Alex Ferguson tells Masters champion Willett: I had eight grand on Spieth

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson congratulated Masters champion Danny Willett, not without telling the Englishman he had £8,000 on Jordan Spieth to claim back-to-back green jackets.

Willett, making just his second Masters appearance, broke through for his maiden major title with a three-stroke victory at Augusta National on Sunday as defending champion Spieth faltered dramatically.

Spieth appeared all but certain to seal consecutive wire-to-wire triumphs at the Masters after birdieing four success holes from the sixth to reach seven under, until the American endured a sensational eight-shot swing.

In footage attributed to BBC Sport, Willett was greeted by iconic football manager Ferguson, who admitted: I had eight grand on Spieth.

Mamma mia! Immobile thanks his mother for Euros strike

Ciro Immobile thanked his mother for giving him his sense of goal after helping Italy to launch their Euro 2020 campaign with a resounding 3-0 win over Turkey in Rome.

A dogged, if unambitious, approach from Senol Gunes side ensured it was 0-0 at the interval at the Stadio Olimpico, but the breakthrough came eight minutes into the second half when Merih Demiral turned Domenico Berardi s powerful cross into his own net.

Lazio striker Immobile was then on hand to convert the rebound from Leonardo Spinazzola s shot – his third consecutive scoring appearance for the Azzurri but a first goal in the finals of a major tournament.

I want to thank my mother for giving me the sense for being in the right place in the right moment, the 31-year-old said, as quoted by U…

Sterling blocks out the noise to let Three Lions roar

Raheem Sterling felt it was important to block the outside world off ahead of his match-winning turn in England s 1-0 Euro 2020 victory over Croatia.

Manchester City forward Sterling was played in for the only goal following some fabulous play by Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after 57 minutes at Wembley.

The 26-year-old s club future has been the subject of mounting speculation after losing his place as an automatic starter for Pep Guardiola, while there has been little progress in talks over extending his contract at the Etihad Stadium that expires in 2023.

A solitary goal for City since the end of February, allayed with the enviable options Gareth Southgate has in attack for England, led to calls for Sterling to be ditched in favour of Jack Grealish a…
